Time and project management

Starting this week, we will have the opportunity to partake in our first rapid ideation session. We will be expected to create a prototype of an artefact in two weeks, kicking off officially in our meeting on Wednesday, when the theme will be selected live. I believe during the next two weeks my organisational, planning and practical skills will very much be put to the test. On top of that I will need to be creative, actually produce and eventually present my final prototype. Mumford & Gustafson (1988) write that creativity is a complex phenomenon and involves processing many influences and going through different stages, all the way from the initial generation of an idea through to the delivery of an innovative product. I want to start early and manage my time well, so I can really make the most of the different stages of the creative process, as well as also potentially try out some more systematic approaches to enhance the process of coming up with new ideas (Kultima et al, 2008).

For this rapid ideation session I plan to work using the Agile approach. I plan to use a Kanban board to manage all my documentation and help me to visualise how much work is in progress (Robson, 2013). I'm planning on setting up project milestones and deadlines within the allocated two weeks.

In their book 'Sprint', Knapp et al (2016) emphasise how, during a sprint, time is precious and you can't afford to be distracted. He recommends no devices in the room, as they tend to suck the momentum out of your sprint. I plan to keep my phone outside my office when I am working on this rapid ideation.

Game Jam Diversifiers

In order to get us going, we were given a list of suggested diversifiers for our consideration, to potentially use in our rapid ideation session; all of them were adapted from the diversifiers used in the Global Game Jam's last three editions (Global Game Jam, n.d.). Themes for diversifiers listed included accessibility, art, sound, coding and narrative, among others.
